As a psychologist and founder of The House of Hormones, I’ve seen firsthand how intertwined mental and physical health are. A healthy mind is just as important as a healthy body, and the habits you create today are the foundation for your well-being tomorrow. Yet, as mums, we often put others first; our children, partners, businesses! Leaving little time for ourselves. But let me remind you of a crucial truth: you can’t pour from an empty cup. It sounds so cliche but just like on an airplane, we must put on our own oxygen masks before helping others.
If you’re waiting for January 1st to start prioritising your health and happiness, let me challenge you: why wait? You don’t need a date on the calendar to begin creating the life you want. Start today, and watch how small, consistent steps can transform your health, mindset, and life.
The Importance of Starting Now
Many mums I work with say they’re waiting for the “right moment” to make changes. But the reality is, life will always be busy. There will always be school runs, work deadlines, and washing piles calling your name. The perfect moment rarely comes. Instead, the best time to start is now!
Building healthy habits isn’t about overhauling your entire routine in one day. It’s about taking small, manageable actions. Each choice you make today is a step toward the life you want. By starting now, you give yourself a head start on building momentum, confidence, and change.
The Power of Small, Consistent Steps
As a psychologist, I’ve studied how habits form and why they stick. Big, dramatic resolutions often fail because they’re overwhelming and unsustainable. But small, consistent actions? Those are life-changing!
Here’s a few ideas of how you can start today:
For your body: Commit to drinking an extra glass of water or moving your body for 10 minutes. These small actions improve physical health and boost your mental clarity.
For your mind: Spend 5 minutes practicing mindfulness or journaling. This can help reduce stress, organise your thoughts, and improve emotional resilience.
For your relationships: Take a moment to connect with your child, partner, or a friend. Quality over quantity is key.
For your business: Do one task today that aligns with your goals—send that email, make that call, or brainstorm your next idea.
Each small step builds on the one before, creating a ripple effect of positive change.

As mums, it’s easy to fall into the trap of self-sacrifice, believing that putting everyone else first is the ultimate act of love. But here’s the truth: when you neglect yourself, you’re not showing up as your best for the people who depend on you. A bit of science: As we breathe more slowly and deeply, we are using our diaphragm muscles (under our ribs) to push the air in and out of our lungs, essentially. Because we are adding more oxygen into our lungs, and deeper, and because the lungs transmit oxygen to the red blood cells zooming around our body, we can bring more oxygen to the places that need it - and this includes the digestive system, brain, muscles, and more! This can reduce brain fog, and help concentration and focus as we move through the day - even when we are finished our breathwork practice. As a result of moving from a SNS (Sympathetic Nervous System) state, where our bodies are essentially in stress and ‘readiness’ constantly - to a PNS state, we start to allow all the benefits of lower stress into our bodies and mental health.
