“I Felt Lost on Maternity Leave—Here’s How Mums Who Build Helped Me Find My Confidence” By MOB member Victoria

The Reality of Maternity Leave: More Challenging Than Expected!

When I first started my maternity leave, I imagined a chilled period filled with bonding moments, serene afternoons, and an effortless transition into motherhood.

However, reality hit hard; the experience was far more challenging than I anticipated. Amidst the highs of cuddles and coos from my newborn, I faced the overwhelming lows of self-doubt and anxiety, sleepless nights (and not just from being woken up every two hours to feed my newborn) and constantly questioning whether I was doing everything right.

Thankfully, I found solace and support through the incredible community of Mums Who Build (The MOB).

The Emotional Rollercoaster of Early Motherhood

The early days of motherhood were an emotional rollercoaster. One moment I’d feel euphoric as I gazed into my baby’s eyes, and the next, I’d be gripped by worry over every little thing—feeding, sleeping, crying. It felt as though I was in uncharted territory, and the pressure to be the perfect mother loomed large. I often found myself grappling with fears of inadequacy, wondering if I was getting it all wrong. It was during these tough moments that the MOB community came to my rescue.

Finding Support Through the Mums Who Build Community

Attending the MOB events became a lifeline for me. Sharing my experiences with other mothers made me realise that I wasn’t alone in my struggles. The stories I heard echoed my own feelings of uncertainty and frustration, reminding me that every mother has her unique journey filled with highs and lows. This sense of shared experience was not only comforting but also empowering. We formed a supportive network for mums, where we could discuss our challenges without fear of judgment. Each conversation left me feeling more validated and less isolated in my journey.

Weekly Coffee Mornings: Building Friendships and Confidence

One of the highlights of my week was the coffee mornings every Friday. These gatherings offered me a precious opportunity to enjoy some adult interaction while still being present with my baby. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, filled with laughter and understanding. I cherished those moments—surrounded by mums building confidence and careers—where we could sip coffee, share stories, and support each other. It felt like a small sanctuary where I could take a breather from the demands of motherhood.

The Impact of MOB Founders Georgie and Bex

The founders of The MOB, Georgie and Bex, played a significant role in creating this safe space for mums. Their warmth and approachability made me feel right at home. From my first event, I was struck by their genuine passion for helping mothers connect and thrive. They fostered an environment where vulnerability was welcomed, and sharing our stories became a source of strength. It was through their guidance that I found the courage to voice my fears and frustrations. Knowing that I had a support system for mums made the daunting journey of motherhood feel a little less overwhelming.

Financial Security During Maternity Leave: Learning to Plan Ahead

MOBs also provided invaluable financial resources for mums, especially in navigating finances during a time when I was not receiving a paycheck. The financial Education shared at our gatherings and through the Financial Toolkit for mums opened my eyes to ways I could empower myself financially, even while on maternity leave. Understanding budgeting, savings, and investment options has not only equipped me with essential knowledge but also offered a sense of control during a time when so much felt uncertain.

The Perfect Blend of Emotional and Practical Support

The combination of emotional support for mums and practical advice made all the difference in my maternity leave experience. I discovered that it was okay to ask for help and lean on others during tough times. I learned that every mother has her unique path, filled with both victories and setbacks, and that it’s perfectly normal to feel overwhelmed. The MOB community reinforced the idea that we are all in this together, and together, we can overcome the challenges that motherhood brings.

Gratitude for the Mums Who Build Community

Reflecting on my maternity leave, I realise how crucial it was to have a network of supportive mothers by my side. Mums Who Build not only offered me a community of understanding and compassion but also helped me regain confidence in myself as a new mother. I am incredibly grateful for the friendships I formed and the wisdom I gained during this time.

I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to Georgie and Bex for their unwavering support and dedication to building this wonderful community for mums. Their efforts have made a lasting impact on my journey through motherhood, reminding me that I am never alone. With the support of The MOB, I emerged from maternity leave feeling empowered and ready to embrace the beautiful chaos of motherhood.
