As mums, we juggle a million things every day. Family, work, self-care (if we’re lucky!), and everything in between. But when it comes to skin, many of us find that no matter how much we wash, moisturise, or slather on the latest serum, our skin just doesn’t seem to cooperate. If you’re struggling with breakouts, dryness, or dullness, the culprit could very well be your hormones.
At The House of Hormones, we’ve made it our mission to help you understand the link between hormones and your skin. So, let’s break it down and look at how hormonal imbalances can impact your complexion, and what you can do about it.
The Hormonal Connection to Your Skin
Our skin is like a mirror, reflecting what’s going on inside our bodies. And when your hormones are out of balance, your skin often shows it first. Hormones like Estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone all play a part in regulating skin function. When these hormones fluctuate—whether due to pregnancy, menopause, stress, or diet—the balance of oil production, collagen production, and skin cell turnover can be disrupted. This can lead to a variety of skin issues, from acne to dryness, pigmentation changes, and even premature ageing.
Common Skin Issues Linked to Hormonal Imbalances
Acne and Breakouts
One of the most common skin complaints linked to hormonal changes is acne. Hormonal fluctuations during puberty, pregnancy, or perimenopause can cause an increase in androgens (male hormones), leading to excess sebum production. This excess oil can clog pores, leading to breakouts, especially around the jawline and chin (hello, hormonal acne!).Dryness and Dehydration
Estrogen is key in maintaining moisture in your skin. As estrogen levels decline (especially during perimenopause), you may notice your skin becoming drier, more sensitive, or even flaky. This can lead to a lack of that youthful, dewy glow we all crave.Hyperpigmentation and Melasma
If you’ve ever noticed dark spots or patches of skin that seem to appear out of nowhere, it could be due to hormonal changes. Conditions like melasma are often triggered by pregnancy or the use of birth control, as fluctuations in estrogen and progesterone can increase melanin production.Premature Ageing
Collagen is the protein that keeps your skin firm and youthful. Unfortunately, as we age and our hormone levels fluctuate, collagen production naturally declines. This leads to sagging skin, wrinkles, and loss of elasticity. (see last weeks article on Collagen)
How to Support Your Skin from the Inside Out
At The House of Hormones, we always say that true skin health starts from within. While products can help, nutrition, exercise, and mental well-being are your first line of defence. Here’s how you can support hormonal balance and, in turn, your skin:
Eat a Balanced Diet
Focus on whole foods rich in antioxidants, healthy fats, and vitamins that promote skin health. Omega-3 fatty acids (found in oily fish, flaxseeds, and walnuts) help reduce inflammation and support skin hydration. Vitamins A, C, and E (found in leafy greens, citrus fruits, and nuts) boost collagen production and fight oxidative stress.Exercise Regularly
Regular physical activity improves blood circulation, helping to nourish the skin and promote a healthy glow. Exercise also reduces stress, which can wreak havoc on your hormones (and your skin). Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise, like walking, yoga, or swimming, most days of the week. I know time is an issue for this, but steps on the school pick up still count!Prioritise Mental Health
Stress is a major disruptor of hormones, particularly cortisol, which can lead to acne, inflammation, and skin sensitivity. Taking time each day for relaxation, whether through meditation, deep breathing exercises, or simply a cup of tea in peace, can have a big impact on both your skin and your hormones.Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate
Dehydrated skin is a sign of imbalance in the body. Drinking enough water throughout the day helps keep your skin plump, moisturised, and radiant.Sleep Well
Beauty sleep is not a myth. Sleep is when your body heals and regenerates, and when your hormones do their best work. Aim for 8-9 hours of quality sleep each night to keep your skin—and your hormones—happy. (Does anyone remember the week we explained why women need more sleep than men - read it here?)
Once you’ve tackled the foundations—nutrition, exercise, stress management—products can help target specific skin concerns related to hormonal imbalances. At The House of Hormones, we partner with top brands that understand the role of hormones in skin health. But remember: products should always be a complement to a healthy lifestyle, not a replacement.
Whether you're looking to target hormonal acne or restore hydration to dry skin, there are products out there that can help support your skin’s needs. But remember, no single product is a magic bullet—consistent care, combined with balanced hormones, will always be your best bet for healthy, glowing skin.
Hormonal imbalances are a natural part of life, but that doesn’t mean you have to accept skin issues as part of the deal. By focusing on balance through nutrition, exercise, and mental well-being, you can support your skin’s natural beauty—and feel like the glowing, confident mum you are.
