The Secret to Thriving as a New Mum: Why Connection is Key (and a little about me), by MOB Member, Zoe Duce
When I first learned that 90% of new mums feel lonely after giving birth, with over half (54%) saying they have no friends, I was shocked. But, as awful as it sounds, it also made me feel a little better about my own experience as a new mum.
I, too, found myself feeling isolated, especially during the first year or two of motherhood. Ironically, this is the time when we need connection more than ever.
You’ve all heard the term "matrescence,". It’s the transformative period new mums go through—physically, hormonally, psychologically, socially, and often, spiritually.
Think about other major life changes you’ve experienced, like graduating, getting your first job, or going through a breakup. Many of these challenging transitions were made easier by leaning on friends, family, or even simply having fun with others to take your mind off it.
But when we become mums, that often doesn’t happen.
Why Connection is So Important for New Mums
Connection has countless benefits that I don’t have time to list here, but just a few include:
Lower anxiety and depression
Better emotional regulation
Higher self-esteem and empathy
Stronger immune system
Mood boosting
Improved resilience
Increased energy
A more positive experience of motherhood
As I dug deeper into this, I realised that connection wasn’t just key to my own happiness as a mum—it’s the key to helping all mums feel happier, healthier, and more connected to life. So sure was I of this, I made a huge decision: I left my successful corporate career and fashion business behind to focus on helping mums rebuild the relationships that matter most in their lives.
That’s why I’m so excited to work with The MOB—a group that shares the same belief in connection as one of their core values. I’m honoured to be regularly blogging for them on this very topic.
When I first met The MOB founders, Georgie and Bex, I thought it might just be another fleeting business contact. Fast forward almost a year and a half, and they’ve become my biggest supporters, advising me on my events and welcoming me into their community. That’s the true power of connection.
Their mission to help mums build financial security is another cause close to my heart. As a mum navigating a diverse career, childcare, business ventures, and my own investment journey, I know how vital it is to have the right support. We need organisations like The MOB to guide us, especially when many women don’t even know where they stand financially because their partner manages everything.
