New Year, Big Goals? How to Stay on Track Using SMART Goals by MOB Co-Founder, G

Hi Mobsters, Happy Monday!

2025 kicked off with so much excitement for me. I’d set some truly big, bold goals for Mums Who Build this year—exciting events, ambitious launches, and new ways to support our incredible community of entrepreneurial mums. But then came Christmas. It was wonderful and magical, filled with laughter, family, and chaos—but honestly, I almost needed a holiday just to recover from the whirlwind!

When January rolled around last week, reality hit me. Suddenly, all those amazing goals I’d mapped out weren’t just ideas anymore—they were things I actually needed to make happen. As a small business founder, where every role and responsibility falls to me, I felt the weight of it all. It was exhilarating and terrifying in equal measure.

I realised I needed to take a step back, pause, and breathe. Thankfully, the week ended with a MOBster Hangout—an inspiring gathering with members of our community. Connecting in person, sharing stories, and opening up about the challenges and joys of building something meaningful reminded me why I do this. We talked about SMART goals, shared ideas, and lifted each other up. By the end of it, I felt refreshed, refocused, and ready to tackle 2025.

Here’s how the SMART goals framework helped me (and can help you!) turn overwhelming ambitions into something manageable and achievable.

How to Set SMART Goals (and Actually Stick to Them)

S – Be Specific

One of the biggest reasons goals can feel overwhelming is vagueness. Goals like “I want to grow my business” or “I want to get fit” sound great but don’t give you a clear direction to follow.

Instead, break your goal down into specific, actionable steps:

  • For business growth: “I’ll launch two new workshops for the Mums Who Build community by March.”

  • For health: “I’ll do yoga twice a week and go for a 30-minute walk every Saturday.”

When your goals are specific, you’ll know exactly what steps to take.

M – Make It Measurable

How will you know when you’ve succeeded? Adding numbers or clear milestones to your goals makes them tangible—and helps you celebrate progress along the way.

Examples:

  • For financial goals: “I’ll save £100 a month.”

  • For community growth: “I’ll increase Instagram followers for Mums Who Build by 10% by posting three times a week.”

Seeing measurable progress keeps you motivated.

A – Ensure It’s Achievable

Dream big, but be realistic about your current situation. Setting achievable goals is key to avoiding burnout and frustration.

If you’re juggling kids, a career, and running a business, working out every day might not be feasible. But aiming for three sessions a week? That’s doable.

For entrepreneurial mums, break large goals into smaller phases. For example:

  • Instead of “I’ll launch a new product,” try “I’ll test my product idea with a pilot group in February.”

Achievable doesn’t mean small—it means realistic and sustainable.

R – Make It Relevant

Your goals should align with your priorities and values. Ask yourself:

  • “Why does this goal matter to me?”

  • “Does it align with the life I want to build?”

If family time is a priority, a relevant goal might be: “I’ll finish work by 6 PM daily to have dinner with my kids.”

For Mums Who Build, this might mean setting goals that align with empowering mums, like, “I’ll host three networking events to connect entrepreneurial mums by June.”

T – Set a Time Frame

Without a deadline, goals often drift into “someday” territory. Adding a time frame creates urgency and helps you stay on track.

Examples:

  • “I’ll declutter one room every weekend and finish by February.”

  • “I’ll secure three new coaching clients by the end of March.”

Deadlines bring focus and make progress feel tangible.

My SMART Reset: How the MOBster Hangout Helped

Revisiting my goals through the SMART framework helped me shift from overwhelm to clarity. I simplified my plans, focused on what I could realistically achieve, and prioritised tasks that aligned with my values and goals.

Attending the MOBster Hangout was a turning point. Being part of the Mums Who Build community—connecting with like-minded women, sharing struggles and successes, and supporting one another—recharged me in ways I hadn’t anticipated.

It reminded me why we created this space: to empower entrepreneurial mums to build businesses, careers, and lives that inspire them.

Your New Year Reset: SMART Goals for 2025

If you’re feeling the weight of your 2025 goals, here’s your reminder to pause and reset:

  1. Check in with yourself: Are your goals realistic for where you’re at right now?

  2. Use SMART goals: Break your ambitions into manageable, actionable steps.

  3. Celebrate small wins: Progress matters more than perfection.

This year is about building something sustainable—not adding more pressure. Whether you’re growing your business, focusing on personal development, or finding balance, SMART goals can help you navigate the journey with confidence.
