As mums balancing work, family, and life, it’s easy to dismiss your own health concerns. But during perimenopause, the transitional phase leading up to menopause, being proactive about your well-being is more important than ever.

Debunking Perimenopause Myths

One common myth is that perimenopause begins in your mid-to-late 40s. In reality, symptoms often start in your mid-30s. Don’t be scared of this number! The sooner you recognise and acknowledge the signs, the sooner you can advocate for your health and feel better.

Perimenopause can bring 80+ different symptoms, which vary greatly from person to person. Here are five of the most common:

  • Irregular Periods – Your cycle might become shorter, longer, or completely unpredictable.

  • Brain Fog – Struggling with memory, focus, or clarity? This frustrating symptom is a hallmark of hormonal shifts. This is one I struggled with and was a real red flag for me!

  • Mood Swings – Hormonal fluctuations can lead to irritability, anxiety, or even episodes of depression.

  • Fatigue – Persistent tiredness can make daily life feel overwhelming.

  • Sleep Disturbances – Trouble falling or staying asleep can disrupt your nights and your energy levels.

Advocating for Your Health

Unfortunately, many women find themselves gaslit by their GPs or healthcare providers, often dismissed with comments like “you’re too young for menopause” or offered generic advice or medication that doesn’t address their needs. This is partly because women’s bodies, particularly in relation to menopause, haven’t been studied thoroughly in medical research.

This is why it’s crucial to advocate for yourself. Use tools like our free Perimenopause Symptom Checker to track changes and have informed conversations with your doctor. If you feel unheard, seek a second opinion—your health and well-being are worth it.
